Significant step in the Copper Mark’s evolution to encompass Consolidated Mining Standard
The Copper Mark, a leading assurance framework promoting responsible production, sourcing, and recycling across the copper, molybdenum, nickel, and zinc value chains, is calling for applications for a new Independent Chair of the Board of Directors to lead the organisation as it evolves to incorporate the Consolidated Mining Standard.
The Copper Mark is one of the four partners, along with Mining Association of Canada (MAC), the World Gold Council, and ICMM, that are developing the Consolidated Mining Standards Initiative (CMSI). The CMSI aims to develop a global standard that reduces complexity and clarifies responsible practices for mining companies of all sizes, across all locations and commodities.
The Copper Mark will own and manage the new Consolidated Mining Standard, Assurance Process and Claims Policy, which is targeted for finalisation in 2026, as well as build on its growing portfolio of activities in the broader mineral and metals value chain. The Copper Mark is in the process of evolving its governance structure, name, and business scope to reposition the organisation to achieve this goal.
“The Independent Chair will play a critical role to uphold the integrity of the Copper Mark and ensure we continue to drive performance improvements across and along mineral and metal value chains.”
Michèle Brülhart, Executive Director of the Copper Mark
The Copper Mark, in line with the Governance Model published by the CMSI on 8 September 2025, has now opened the call for applications for the Independent Chair of its evolved Board of Directors. Potential candidates can either apply directly or be nominated, with their consent, before 4 November 2025. The period of appointment is for three years, renewable once with agreement of the Board.
The criteria for selecting the Independent Chair includes previous board experience, and extensive leadership experience in government, multilateral organisations, not-for-profit sector or business. Potential candidates cannot have worked in the mining and metals industry in the past three years.
Potential candidates require experience in multi-stakeholder processes, the ability to facilitate dialogue and foster consensus among diverse stakeholders, and have a demonstrated understanding of governance best practice, particularly in multi-stakeholder or standard-setting contexts.
The key attributes of the Independent Chair include the ability to communicate sincerely and respectfully with colleagues and have demonstrated success in cultivating a collaborative culture.
The full scope of the role and requirements for potential candidates is available here.
The evolved Copper Mark’s Governance Model will be led by an independent Board, comprised of 17 persons including the Independent Chair, balancing commercial and non-commercial interests from both mining (upstream) and value chain (downstream) participants.
In line with the Governance Model, the selection of the Independent Chair of the Board of Directors will be led by the CMSI’s Stakeholder Advisory Group and Industry Advisory Group.
The development of the CMSI has been driven by public consultation and stakeholder engagement. On 8 October 2025 the final consultation opened for further feedback on the Consolidated Standard, Assurance Process and Claims Policy. The final public consultation will close on 17 November 2025.
