The Copper Mark's Evolution
Our evolution will allow us to grow and pursue our evolved vision, mission, and approach. The evolved organisation will adopt a new name, brand, and governance structure to help us build on our track record and drive responsible production at scale across the industry.
The story of our evolution
Our purpose
The Copper Mark is evolving by scaling a trusted system of credible standards and robust assurance to enable responsible metals and minerals production and sourcing across the global value chain.
Our role is to define clear expectations for responsible performance and ensure they are applied consistently and verified independently.
Our ambition is clear: to make responsible production and sourcing the norm, and a foundation for a sustainable future.
Why this matters
Metals and minerals are essential to modern life and increasingly in demand as critical inputs for energy systems, infrastructure, mobility and new technologies. They enable human development and the global transition to a more sustainable future.
As demand accelerates, so too does the need for confidence that these materials are produced responsibly.
Meeting this moment requires more than intent. It requires clear expectations and independent verification of performance.
At the heart of our approach is this principle: meeting today’s needs must not compromise the ability of future generations to meet their own.
Catalyst for change
The world needs metals, and it needs them produced responsibly. This is the challenge the Copper Mark was created to address.
Since 2020, the Copper Mark has grown to include more than 130 sites, representing around 40% of global mined copper production. What began as an assurance framework for copper production is evolving into a coherent system that supports consistent expectations and verified performance across commodities, geographies, and the entire value chain.
At its core are independently governed standards, defining what responsible performance requires, and a rigorous assurance framework, ensuring those standards are consistently applied and independently verified.
Together, these provide the transparency, comparability and accountability needed to strengthen trust and enable progress.
Stepping up to the challenge
The challenge now is to accelerate progress across increasingly complex and interconnected value chains.
To meet this moment, we are evolving into an organisation that operates across commodities, geographies and the entire value chain, while strengthening the independence, transparency and rigour that define us.
We remain anchored to a single purpose: to accelerate the widespread adoption of robust, internationally recognised standards so that metals and minerals are produced and sourced in a way that respects people, communities and the environment.
We are scaling an organisation designed to drive real, system-wide change. Our ambition is not only to define responsible practices, but to enable their adoption across the industry. We work from mine to final product, supporting producers by identifying performance gaps and recognising their continuous improvement. Drawing on our strengths in key value chains, we provide metal-specific solutions the sector needs, complementing existing initiatives.
Delivering impact at scale
Our mission is delivered through three core pillars:
- New mining standard: We will manage and implement a new upstream standard applicable to all commodities, designed to simplify the standards landscape and to strengthen responsible practices across mining, smelting and refining. The standard is being developed with our partners via the Consolidated Mining Standard Initiative.
- Responsible Metals Value Chain Platform: We are building a connected system to link responsible producers from mine site to end user by, improving transparency and traceability across the value chain. Learn more about the Value Chain Platform.
- Midstream and Chain of Custody standards: We are enhancing our suite of standards to maintain the integrity of responsibly produced materials as they move through global value chains. Learn more about the Chain of Custody and Midstream standards.
Governance that builds trust
Our journey is supported by our evolved independent governance structure that creates space for diverse stakeholder voices and balances decision-making between commercial and non-commercial actors from across the value chain.
The evolved structure is designed to reinforce accountability, strengthen oversight, support power sharing, foster unity, build consensus, and operate independently.
Shaping the future
Building on our track record, we are advancing a more integrated and scalable approach to responsible production and sourcing, one that meets rising expectations and lays the foundation for a sustainable future.
Our ambition is clear: responsible production embedded at scale across the industry.
This requires alignment around shared expectations, underpinned by independent verification. By enabling this, the Copper Mark helps build confidence in how materials are produced and supports informed decision-making across the value chain.
This is how real change happens. And this is the role the Copper Mark is evolving to play.
Evolved vision, mission, and approach
Vision
A world where mineral and metal products are made responsibly as the foundation of a sustainable future.
Mission
To apply credible standards and robust assurance at sites where mineral and metal products are mined, fabricated, transformed, and recycled.
Approach
- Drive positive change on the ground to respect human rights, benefit communities, and protect environments.
- Strengthen value chain transparency to connect responsible actors.
- Complement existing initiatives by addressing gaps in the value chain.
Milestones on our evolution journey
Governance appointments
On 17 March 2026, we announced Daniel Ortega-Pacheco's appointment as Director and Chair Designate to serve initially as a non-executive Director before taking the role of Chair of the Copper Mark’s evolved Board of Directors once it is established later this year.
Applications are now under review ahead of the appointment of 16 non-executive Directors to come later this year.
Once established, the Copper Mark’s current independent Board of Directors will increase to 17 members, including a Chair and 16 non-executive Directors. The new structure includes more space for stakeholder voices and balances decision-making between commercial and non-commercial actors and across the minerals and metals value chain.
Evolved name and brand
The Copper Mark's evolved name and brand will be announced later this year.
